Assignment 2- Presentation Evaluation

Dynamic Radio Evaluation

A little bit about Dynamic Radio
Dynamic radio is a contemporary hit radio station. This means we target listeners of the younger age group. Our podcasts and radio air time will often discuss social networking & competitions relevant to this age range (Mcfly tickets). The content of the podcasts attract the younger audience as well as the music we will play. Contemporary hit radio stations often play the UK top 40 on repeat.

Competition
There are many contemporary hit radio stations as it plays mainstream music which appeals to most people. We had established our main competition would be capital FM. We worked on making our station more appealing by also including local artists and local competitions (e.g Portsmouth Guild Hall was the venue for Mcfly tickets).

The music content
When looking for music to use in our podcast we downloaded free music from the free music archive.
We used music to include in our podcasts for jingles, sound beds and for general music content. If we were a real radio station, music from the UK top 40 would have been used in our podcast. We used soundbeds to make the speech more upbeat and appealing. Music was also used for entertainment purposes e.g jingles to introduce the competition to win tickets for Mcfly. Sound effects were also used for a comedy affect (when joking on the radio we used laughing and clapping sound effects).

Our presentation
We gave a presentation pitching our radio station to the class. We included demo pieces from our podcast. We gave general descriptions of the content, the audience, the playlist and gave a description of the target listeners.

The feedback
After the presentation we received feedback from the class. Overall, we received positive feedback. Generally I think this is because the feedback was from a class ranged between 17 and 19 years of age. This is the age range of the target audience for Dynamic Radio. The feedback taught us that we had a good relationship with potential listeners as the majority of the class fit in the age range of our target listeners and stated that they would listen to the music. The student feedback contained notes written by classmates such as: " Target audience is very informative, everything is explained very well and clearly".

Is there a clear idea of the target listener?
With the music content, the competitions and the style of radio station there is a clear idea of the target listener. Our feedback sheets show that everyone in the class either 'totally' or 'mostly' agreed with this statement.

Is the format relevant to the target listener?
The format -CHR- is very relevant to the age range of the target listener. Our feedback sheets show that everyone in the class either 'totally' or 'mostly' agreed with this statement. One feedback sheet showed 'nearly'.

Is the music relevant to the target listener?
The music content is popular pop music relevant to the target listener. The feedback from the class shows that everyone agreed with this statement with no negative comments made.

Is the topic relevant to the target listener?
The general topics discussed on Dynamic Radio are relevant to the target audience. The discussions are similar to those on Capital FM. e.g celeb gossip, social networking, contests etc. We also received positive feedback on behalf of this statement.

Is there care taken in editing/does it sound good?
The overall editing contained all the required areas: Smooth, Clear & Loud, soundbeds, jingles etc. However during difficulties with the computer software we had some technical problems presenting our podcast demo and we had lost our best work. However, we mostly received positive feedback for this statement too. The negative effects we had was a few hints of mic noise. This is something we would work on if we were to do this project again.

Is there any reason for listeners to stay tuned?
Much like other CHR stations, there are always reasons for listeners to stay tuned. Dynamic radio had a contest to win Mcfly on hold to keep listeners tuned and interested. We also used terminology such as 'coming up' and 'stay tuned for..'. We received all positive feedback on behalf of this statement.

Do you think this was a good presentation?
The presentation contained all the requirements needed to pitch however we could have made it more visually appealing. The feedback we received comments such as: 'could have had a bit more info on the target audience but very good overall' and 'more explanation needed when presenting'.

Overall-GOOD
We chose all the music content and contest choices carefully. Our competition was to win tickets to Mcfly. We kept the competition local for local listeners by having the venue in the Portsmouth Guild Hall. The music content was all popular chart music. This is to try our best to compete with other big branded CHR stations. We used our own techniques and creative flair with the speech content by making it personal with the audience and laughing/joking on air which kept the show relaxed and entertaining for the audience. Most radio stations are popular because of the presenters so we tried to make it personal. Overall there was good communication, information and style of the powerpoint and the overall assignment.

Overall-needs improvement
More care taken when editing. There were hints of fuzzing mic noise. We could have resulted this by each presenter having their own mic and a very quiet space to record. Some of our recording contained background noise from other classrooms, however we edited this out. We were pressed for time at the end of the assignment with a system error when trying to upload our podcast, this meant we had to try to re-edit and this took away all the quality and some content used from the original edited version of the podcast.

Assignment 2 - task 2

TASK 2 Music content

When looking for music to use in our podcast we downloaded free music from the free music archive.

We need music to include in our podcasts for jingles, sound beds and for general music content.

  • We want to use soundbeds to make the speech more upbeat and appealing.
  • We want to use jingles for entertainment purposes and to make the podcast memorable.
  • We want to use sound effects to add comedy to the podcast.

We have permission to use the music which has been downloaded (creative commons licence).
That means we have permission to use it non commercially meaning you can't use it to make money out of it. The music is allowed to be used completely free as long as credit is given to the artists from the Free Music Archive website.

The music played on our GOLD podcast aimed at an older audience will be very much different to the music played on our contemporary hit radio aimed at young people.
From research conducted we concluded that the music used in the contemporary hit radio for general playing and for soundbeds will be more upbeat and lively whereas the music playing on the gold radio station will be more calming and relaxing music.

We wish to use Jarod C Balough - Strides as a sound bed for our podcast aimed at an older audience as it is more calm and relaxing. The music was found and downloaded under the classical sector of the free music archive and from our research we discovered that it is much like the music played on radio stations aimed at an older audience for example Angel FM.

We wish to use DJMC Haram - Opra Hell as soundbeds for our podcast aimed at contemporary hit radio listeners. This is because its upbeat lively music which will keep the audience alert and interested in the speech. This music was found under the Soul-RnB sector of the free music archive much like chart music to a mainstream audience.
