Assignment one -

Assignment one - Music programming - Types and Styles

-Beatz Radio FM-

My community radio station is a contemporary hits radio targeted at a younger audience teens to early 20s. Beats FM plays modern chart music and repeats current pop hits. Beatz radio broadcasts across the South Coast.
The main competition for this radio station are other contemporary hits radio stations such as Capital FM and Radio 1 and The Hits radio. All these radio stations play the same music genres and target to a younger audience. These are stations that my target audience have access to as they're broadcasting in the local area. Although many stations broadcast in this area these three radio stations are the biggest competitors for Beatz FM .
Stations such as Heart and Radio 2 will not be competition as they do not have the right radio format to connect with listeners. Heart and Radio 2 are examples of Adult contemporary radio stations targeting to an older audience , playing music from the 80s and 90s with singers and bands such as Duran Duran and Take That. There are also other radio formats such as Specialist , Gold , Community radio which all categorize their listeners from the type of music they play. These formats and stations will not be competition for Beatz radio as my radio station is categorized into contemporary hits radio format.

Capital FM
Capital is a radio network of nine independent contemporary hits radio stations. My radio stations competitor is Capital FM South Coast. My research shows that Capital FM south coast currently serve their audience using techniques to keep listeners interested and gain dedicated listeners. Capital FM has many different platforms so there are a number of different ways that its listeners can connect to the radio station. Platforms such as AM/FM , Internet ( Capital South Coast website) , Digital terrestrial and digital satellite TV ( Capital FM has a digital channel ) . Capital FM connects with listeners with good presenters , quiz/competitions which all appeal to the correct age range. Capital FM's website contains pictures that will interest the audience. This screen grab shows the albums of images on their website . Also on the side there is a tab called WIN and this gives the audience opportunity to enter the stations competitions. The website contains "twitter pictures" as well as a link to their twitter page where they frequently tweet to stay connected and to build a relationship with its listeners, these are examples of how capital FM connects with its listeners.

Radio 1
BBC radio one has a few different formats ; the main being Contemporary Hits radio . As well as News , entertainment , speech and showbiz. From my research i have conducted the main competitor for Beatz radio is in face BBC radio one . This is because radio one has the greatest average hours per listener , Listening share of TSA % and population. This information was obtained from RAJAR. The main reason for radio one being such a big competitor is from the way that the station connects with its listeners and appeals to their needs and interests . All contemporary hits radio stations play the same genre of music and connect to the same age range , however what makes a radio station different? The most important thing is how a station connects with its listeners and how the station makes them feel. A station must fulfill a good relationship with its listeners , relaxed / chilled vibe , social / gossip , and alive enthusiastic vibe . All of these are main areas of this radio which makes it a main competitor. The Radio 1 website features a chart which displays the most popular music of the time which will appeal to the audience which has a need to listen to the most popular music of the week. The screen grab shows a chart which is frequently updated to keep the listeners informed.

The Hits Radio
The hits , along with the other contemporary hit radio stations , play chart hit pop music to meet the listeners needs. The hits is a main competitor for beatz radio. The hits is owned by the Bauer group which also broadcasts many other popular sister radio stations to the hits radio such as Kiss radio and Magic radio , whereas my radio station is an indie radio company instead of a conglomerate such as Bauer. The hits has a few different radio platforms such as digital television as well as radio broadcasting. The hits radio has a website which includes links to social networking on twitter to connect with the presenters , quiz / competitions and celebrity gossip . This appeals to the listeners needs. The Hits radio website even contains a dating advice column to really connect with the listeners and give advice in a friendly way which makes them feel relaxed and comfortable which is an important area which the station must fulfill to keep the listeners connected. The website even helps listeners know where to find the hits and lists its platforms on the home page even a new phone app to keep listeners connected wherever they are. From the screengrab of the homepage you can see the tab at the top also contains a WIN page where you can enter competitions this keeps listeners interested.

All the stations above are potential competition for Beatz FM. Each station has a good relationship with its listeners making them feel comfortable and friendly. With the UK top 40 played on all three this appeals to the listeners needs . With each station now broadcasting on TV it gives off a relaxed chilled out vibe. The website contains gossip and information and each station has a twitter profile and a facebook page to socially connect with its listeners. In the evenings ( especially on weekends ) the stations broadcast energetic alive party music to fulfill the criteria that the listeners want . The large majority of the listeners at that point in time with need enthusiastic party songs to get them ready for a night out . These main areas are the listeners needs and the stations fulfill them at different points in the day.

The target audience for contemporary hit radio is teens to early 20s so the needs for each part of the day are fulfilled. Breakfast 6am-9am plays chart music to get listeners enthusiastic and ready to get up and ready as well as needs such as weather forecasts and news from conventional sources (sometimes). Also there tends to be celeb banter during the morning broadcasts. During the day time period 9am-4pm the humorous tone continues along with more chart music and conversation topics and debates. In drive time 4pm-7pm listeners will need to be kept interested the most so there is a wide range of things such as gossip , quiz / competitions and important news of traffic alerts. Overnight 7pm-6am music is played to keep the listeners alive and enthused. As the station broadcasts 24 hours a day the content changed throughout the day to meet the listeners needs.

Different formats meet the listeners needs in different ways. Adult contemporary radio caters to an older audience with music ranging from the 80s and 90s to current with artists such as Take That , Ed Sheeran , Bruno Mars , Duran Duran . These artists give off more of a chilled out vibe to meet the listeners needs rather than upbeat dance music played on contemporary hits radio stations such as my radio station Beatz FM. This is because this sort of music appeals to the older audience better to give them a relaxed vibe especially in Drive Time where its important to connect with the listeners and keep them listening. Stations such as Heart cater to their audience of middle ages listeners with more quiz' and competitions.

A specialist radio format caters to a certain interest of music taste heavy metal etc. The music played is specialist to one music taste. Kerrang is an example of a specialist radio station as its format is purely rock music. Kerrang connects with its listeners by catering to this specialist taste and also has platforms such as TV channel , website , radio and even a magazine. Some stations can be so specialist that it only plays music from one artist to cater to the fans of this artist for example "the belieber radio"which is a web radio featuring music only by Justin Bieber.

Community radio stations are local stations which appeal to people in the local area providing information and news to the locals. Music played tends to be local artists. Express FM is an example of a community radio station in the Portsmouth area. Express FM gives information which appeals to the people in the local area such as pompey football news and scores and traffic information. Express FM promotes events in the local area for example their website is now advertising "the christmas snowball" an event which takes place in Southsea. Express FM will have less population on RAJAR than other stations and formats of radio. Therefore there will be less of a Reach making it not a threatening station to other big stations such as BBC radio stations which have the most average hours per listener and listening share of TSA. Express FM will usually cater to a middle ages audience in the area so it contains humor such as local football banter.

Gold is a format which plays music from a specific generation and the most popular music of that generation dating back. Playing classical music and music such as the beatles. Angel FM is an example of a gold radio format as it plays popular music from the listeners generation. Angel FM is an oldies radio style catering to their needs by playing music they want to hear.

None of the stations and formats above are competition to my radio station as none of the content will appeal to the target audience of Beatz FM therefore none pose a threat to my station.

Beatz FM will cater to the listeners needs with things that appeal to the age range of teens with banter and competitions with platforms such as Radio and TV and the radio station will also need a website and twitter page to socially connect to the listeners in a friendly way. The station will appeal to the listeners needs.

Radio research

Capital FM south coast

Capital FM south coast is a contemporary hits radio aimed at a younger audience teens to early 20s where modern chart hits are frequently repeated.

Listener needs -all through the day- tend to be:

  • Chart music
  • Gossip
  • Presenter banter
  • Competitions and concert info
  • Humour
  • Social media

Young people would be the main audience of this radio station. The website contains:

Comfort
  • Listeners are always involved with contests and presenter banter that the listeners can relate to such as news in the social media and phone calls involving listeners with contests making them feel involved with the station which is more likely to keep them listening.
Chillout
  • As its contemporary hits the station only plays the music that the listeners want to hear as you can see from the screen grab its top chart music, this keeps the audience happy and in a mood to keep listening. The presenters talk about things which involve the audience making them feel comfortable such as quiz and contests even on twitter.
Alive/Energize
  • The station tends to get people in the mood for a night out in the evening rather than winding down as its main audience spends its nights clubbing. Also contests excite the listeners and keep them tuned in.
Socialize/Gossip
  • This website contains a lot of celeb gossip and this means that it caters to the target audiences interests , as you can see there are alot of articles available online and a link to the capital twitter page where the presenters connect with listeners through social media. The presenters play upbeat music which will give them the enthusiasm to go out.

BBC- a unique broadcaster

BBC- a unique broadcaster

BBC radio was formed in order to stop Radio pirating which still happens today. Radio pirating is where a radio is broadcasted without license. BBC was formed in 1922 to prevent this and Radio 1 was launched in 1967 to prevent this.

The Royal Charter
The BBC Trust - BBC is established by a Royal Charter. It is a constitutional basis for the BBC. It sets out the public purposes of the BBC and it guarantees independence. The BBC is independent from the government due to this Royal Charter and agreement. This makes it different from commercial radio but...
how is the BBC funded?
The BBC makes its money mainly through TV licence. License fee is about £145 for colour TV. The BBC as an organization doesn't subject its audience to advertising which is how other commercial radio and TV make its money. BBC makes its money purely from license fee.
Is value for money provided?
Paying £145.00 is good value for money for TV and radio in my opinion. With the license fee the BBC formed a program of in depth value for money reviews carried out by national audit offices in a way that the BBC determines value for money. One report published shows that the BBC manages the costs of its support functions supports value for money. BBC's reporting of overhead costs improves transparency. So paying for a license fee is considered good value for money. One of the BBC's missions/objectives for 2012 is to make the license fee work even harder.

BBC have visions , objectives and values for the future. The BBC's mission is to educate inform and entertain. With its TV and radio stations doing so. BBC intend to make a greater improvement to quality in their output. BBC is the most creative organization in the world. BBC aim to provide value for money by providing a basic service of entertaining and informing the public. The BBC provide many services on TV , Radio and Online.
What they do? TV and multi-platform .

BBC TV channels:
  • BBC one
  • BBC two
  • BBC three
  • BBC four
  • CBBC
  • Cbeebies
  • BBC news
  • BBC parliament
  • BBC HD
  • BBC ALBA

BBC Radio:
  • BBC radio one
  • BBC radio one Xtra
  • BBC radio two
  • BBC radio three
  • BBC radio four
  • BBC radio four extra
  • BBC radio five live
  • BBC radio five live sports extra
  • BBC radio 6 music
  • BBC radio asian network
Online:
  • BBC online
  • BBC Iplayer
Around the world there are services such as BBC around the world news and BBC world service. BBC also have services around the UK like BBC Scotland and BBC north. BBC have commercial products which help fund its public services such as Doctor who box set etc. This makes it unique that it is independent and its broadcasting is different to other commercial TV and Radio.
